When they reached the house, Jackson went to take care of the repair in the downstairs bathroom while Aurora fed and changed Buster, getting him ready for his afternoon nap. Jackson would have appreciated some of that sleepiness during the night, but that wasn’t how babies worked, apparently. Buster hadn’t been fussy, just alert and restless. Jackson could appreciate that since he’d spent many nights and days of his life in that state.

By rights, he should be feeling that way right now. Being this close to Aurora, making love to her should be damaging his inner calm. He strove to keep everything in his life balanced and under control, neatly compartmentalized. Aurora made that impossible, but for some reason it wasn’t upsetting him. If anything, it felt good. He’d enjoyed playing cards with her even though she’d beat him soundly. He liked watching her with Buster, and he liked the sense of family they were creating even if it was fictitious and temporary.

None of that made any sense, he thought, as he put the tools back in the basement. When he returned upstairs, Aurora was waiting for him in the dining room with three printed papers clutched to her chest.

“What’s going on?” he asked since she seemed anxious to share something with him.

“I did a little research while I was at the library. Do you remember I told you about the review of the onesie on the Etsy seller’s site? Here it is.” She placed a paper on the table so he could see it. “I traced the same username to an Instagram account and found this.” The second paper had a picture of the onesie and appeared to be written by an obviously excited person who’d received the item.

“Okay,” he said, considering the image. “It looks like that could be the same person.”

“I feel sure it is,” Aurora handed him the last page. “When I dug a little deeper on the Instagram page, I came across this picture. I thought if you shared it with the team, they could identify the couple. She’s pregnant in the image, but it dates from six months ago, which makes sense if she’s Buster’s mother.”

Jackson stared at the photo while every curse word he knew raced through his head. If those were Buster’s parents, he and Aurora had a much bigger problem than Jackson had bargained for. But there was no need to worry Aurora with that until he’d confirmed it. “I’ll give the team a call and let them know what you found.”

“Great,” she said, obviously pleased with herself. “I’m going to nap while Buster is out. Don’t let me sleep too long, though, and you should get some rest, too.” She kissed his cheek and was gone. He waited until he heard the bedroom door open and close before he slumped down in a chair.

“Son of a bitch,” he said as he studied the photo again, staring at the man in the image. “Martin Carneal.” No wonder it had felt like they were being chased by professional thugs with a long reach.
